About ADHD in Practice
Janine Nesbitt - UK ADHD coach, SENCo Specialist & Late Diagnosis Advocate
I help UK parents make sense of ADHD, SEND, school meetings and the behaviour that nobody seems to understand properly.
I’m Janine, founder of ADHD in Practice.
I help UK parents make sense of ADHD, SEND, school meetings and the behaviour that often gets misunderstood as “naughty”, “defiant”, “lazy” or “attention-seeking”.
I bring together 34 years in UK schools, SENCo experience, dyslexia specialist knowledge, ADHD coaching, emotional literacy work, lived ADHD experience and parent experience.
In plain English, I understand this from the classroom, the paperwork, the meeting room and the kitchen table.
Why this work matters
Many children hold it together at school, then fall apart at home.
School may say:
“They’re fine here.”
But you are seeing the meltdowns, refusals, anxiety, friendship wobbliness, homework battles, bedtime chaos and after-school collapse.
That mismatch can leave parents feeling confused, blamed or quietly furious in the car park.
I help you work out what may really be going on — masking, sensory overload, executive function difficulties, anxiety, emotional regulation, unmet SEND needs or the simple fact that your child has been white-knuckling it through the day.
No jargon soup.
No toxic positivity.
No pretending a sticker chart will fix an overwhelmed nervous system.
What I believe
Behaviour is information.
Not an excuse.
Not a free pass.
Not “anything goes”.
But information.
When a child is melting down, refusing, shutting down, masking, avoiding or exploding, something is being communicated. The job is to work out what.
I believe in:
understanding before reacting
practical strategies over perfect parenting
clear language in school meetings
realistic support for actual family life
helping parents feel informed, confident and less alone

Support that changed everything
Thank you so much for all the support you have given our son, and to us as a family, during his time with you. Your guidance, understanding and advice have been truly invaluable, and the difference you have made will stay with us for a very long time.
You have supported not only our son’s needs, but also helped us feel more confident, informed and better able to support him ourselves. We will always be incredibly grateful for the care, encouragement and expertise you have shown throughout.
Thank you again for everything.

He finally feels understood
Janine’s support has been life-changing for our 14-year-old son. He has ADHD and autism, and before working with her he was struggling in ways that affected every part of his life - school, confidence, emotional regulation, relationships and his view of himself. He often felt misunderstood, and as parents we were worried about the path he was on.
What Janine did so well was take the time to truly understand him. She did not use a one-size-fits-all approach. She worked out what was behind the struggles, helped him make sense of how his brain works, and gave him practical, realistic strategies he could actually use. At the same time, she helped us understand how to support him more effectively at home and alongside school.
The change in him has been significant. He is more confident, more settled, and much better able to manage situations that would once have overwhelmed him. He has a stronger sense of who he is, what helps, and how to move forward. That has had a huge impact on his day-to-day life.
What matters most is that this support has not just helped in the moment. It has laid foundations for the future. We know Janine’s work will continue to help him as he grows, and we are incredibly grateful for the difference she has made.

She helped us become the parents our daughter needed
Before we started working with Janine, family life felt tense far too often. Our seven-year-old daughter was bright, funny and loving, but there was constant conflict at home, especially with her sibling. Everything seemed to turn into a battle, and if I am honest, my husband and I were not always handling it in the same way. We both wanted to help, but we were exhausted and often pulling in different directions.
Janine helped us understand what was really going on underneath the behaviour rather than just reacting to the explosions. She gave us practical strategies that actually worked in real life, not just in theory. More importantly, she helped us feel like capable parents again. We became calmer, more consistent, and much more united.
The difference in our daughter has been huge. The sibling rivalry has reduced massively, there is less shouting, less blame, and far more understanding at home. We are now on the same page as parents, and that has changed everything. Janine did not just support our daughter. She strengthened the whole family.

We stopped firefighting and started parenting together
Our daughter is 13, bright, capable and full of potential, but for a long time she was barely accessing school. The school refusal had become overwhelming, and although we knew she was intelligent, her dyslexia and ADHD were affecting everything - confidence, learning, friendships, and her ability to cope day to day. She was reactive, anxious and increasingly disconnected from school life.
Janine understood very quickly that this was never about laziness or unwillingness. She helped us, and school, see the bigger picture. Her support was thoughtful, practical and incredibly well judged. She helped our daughter feel understood rather than judged, and that changed the tone of everything.
The progress has been remarkable. Our daughter has returned to school, is now managing lessons far better, and is beginning to enjoy learning again, slowly. Her friendships have improved, she is less reactive, and she seems far more secure in herself. We are finally seeing the bright, capable girl we always knew was there. I am not saying days are not a battle as they are but so much better than where we started from.
Janine’s support has made a profound difference not just to our daughter’s education, but to her wellbeing and future.
