School Support for Parents

Practical UK based SEND, ADHD and school support for parents who feel unsure what to ask for next.

If school concerns are leaving you feeling unheard or overwhelmed, I can help you understand what may be happening, prepare for SENCo and school meetings, and work towards clearer support, agreed actions and meaningful review.

Individual guidance from a former SENCo, qualified teacher and dyslexia specialist with 34 years’ experience in UK education.

Being a dad of an ADHD child can be a hard route to navigate.

When school concerns become difficult to navigate

You may know your child is struggling but find it difficult to explain what you are seeing, challenge vague responses or work out what support should already be in place.

School support helps you organise your concerns, understand the options and prepare for the conversations that need to happen next.

This support may help when

School says your child is fine

School sees a child who appears settled, while home sees exhaustion, distress, shutdown or emotional collapse.

Meetings leave you with more questions

Discussions move quickly, actions remain vague and you leave unsure what has actually been agreed.

Attendance or well-being is deteriorating

Your child is becoming anxious, refusing lessons, missing school or struggling to recover from the school day.

Behaviour is being treated as the whole problem

Incidents are being sanctioned without enough attention to triggers, unmet needs or barriers to learning.

You need to know what to ask for

You want clearer language, appropriate questions and a realistic plan before speaking to school.

Support is inconsistent

Adjustments depend on the member of staff, are not written down or are not being reviewed.

What we can work on together

One

Understand the school difficulty

We look at what is happening before, during and after difficult moments and identify possible barriers involving learning, communication, sensory needs, emotional regulation, executive function or anxiety.

  • Patterns and triggers

  • Differences between home and school

  • Support already tried

  • Where expectations may exceed capacity

  • What the behaviour may be communicating

Two

Decide what needs to change

We identify the main pressure points, decide what needs attention first and create practical next steps for school, home or both.

  • Priorities

  • Realistic strategies

  • Evidence to gather

  • Questions to ask

  • Actions and review dates

Three

Prepare for the next conversation

We help you organise your concerns and prepare for meetings, emails, reviews or professional appointments.

  • Explain concerns clearly

  • Present home evidence

  • Challenge vague responses

  • Ask for recorded support and clarify who will do what

  • Agree when progress will be reviewed

Questions every parent should ask school

  1. What need may be sitting underneath this behaviour?

  2. What support has already been tried?

  3. How consistently has that support been used?

  4. What evidence shows whether it is working?

  5. What will happen next, who is responsible and when will it be reviewed?

  • prepare your key questions;

  • develop clear, professional wording;

EHCP Support & Guidance

EHCP paperwork where do you start as a parent when trying to just get support for your SEN child

When SEN Support no long feels enough

School may have tried adjustments, interventions or support plans, but your child is still struggling to access learning, attend school, regulate emotions or make progress.

Understand the EHCP process, organise your evidence and decide what to do next.

No diagnosis is required to ask for support.

You should not leave another school meeting wondering what just happened

Good preparation helps you explain the difficulty clearly, challenge vague answers and leave with actions that are specific, recorded and reviewable.
